Integration of Information and Computer

Technology in Instruction Part 2

Queen's University

Module 4

Personal Electronic Portfolio

Welcome!
The purpose of this website is to present my collection of work from my Integration of Information and Computer technology in instruction Part 2 Course I enrolled in at Queen's University in the summer of 2009. If your wondering where Part 1 might be its under construction at this time! Delays, delays! Tough to get good help these days!

Portfolios are what I consider invaluable. In this case, it provides important insight into a teachers' individual talents and beliefs about education. This portfolio represents a personal reflection of my collection of work to date! More work will be added as the course continues throughout the summer!

At this point, my portfolio is organized around the first four modules of my course.

                      Module 1: Integration Techniques

                      Module 2: Instructional Strategies

                      Module 3: Classroom Management

                      Module 4: Assessment & Evaluation

In addition, check out the Related Links section of the site to access a tremendous number a valuable sites that might be of interest in your teaching practice!

A. Module 1 Integration Techniques

                    Module 1A - Teacher Roles

I tend to find myself in all roles at different times in my teaching practice. I can’t say that I find myself in one specific role. I’m not sure if this is a pro or a con! Computers in my classroom only came to fruition a few years ago. Over the past few years access to computers has become much easier and as a result I have been able to better incorporate computer use into my teaching practice.

                    Module 1B -  Lesson Plans

Integrating technology into our lessons can directly and indirectly benefit our students and our own teaching practices. In working through the various websites in the course references I found a tremendous number of resource material that could benefit all grade levels across the curriculum.

                    Module 1C - Online Resources

When it comes to selecting online resources, the sky's the limit. There's an endless supply of resources, and more are posted online every day. The challenge is to sort through the maze of choices and pinpoint resources that best fit your curricular and teaching needs.

                     Module 1D - Integration Techniques

Reviewing existing lesson plans is critical in addressing student needs and incorporating technology into a lesson. This piece of work represents the modification of lesson plans from different curricular areas  to incorporate the use of computer technology.

B. Module 2: Instructional Strategies

                    Module 2A - Technology Connections

Information about learning styles and Multiple Intelligence (MI) is helpful for all teachers interested in becoming better educators. Learning styles are different approaches or ways of learning. They involve designing methods of instruction for individuals that are presumed to allow the students to learn best.

                    Module 2B - Instructional Strategies

In my grade 12 University Chemistry course, I have experienced a lot of success having students create an electronic periodic table library over the past several years. The introduction of a virtual fieldtrip could be a great way to apply computer technology to my students’ learning by allowing students to investigate elements of the periodic table.

                    Module 2C - Teacher Workshop

This piece of work involved the choosing of one strategy introduced in the Instructional Strategies section of this course ( i.e. a WebQuest, a virtual tour, a global collaborative project…) This link leads you through a virtual Field Trip Power Point presentation developed for teachers on how to implement the strategy in their classrooms.

C. Module 3: Classroom Management

                    Module 3A - Student Files

For this piece of work, I will speak with respect to my own filing practices and then what I do with my students in terms of filing practice. I do believe that my laptop is the one piece of technological equipment that I could not due without in my teaching practice! Although I do have hard copies of all my work, my computer holds the access to all my course work that I use throughout the school year! To lose my class files would be a disastrous day in my life! For that reason, my organization of student files for each of the courses I teach is essential to my teaching survival!

Module 3B - Classroom Management Dilemma

I teach in a high school setting with a population of just over 400 students from grades 9 - 12. Our school has three computer labs with access to 25 computers in each classroom. We also have a library with access to another 15 computers. Each classroom in the school has been recently outfitted with a computer station for classroom use by teacher and students. The biggest dilemma facing me and my classes are getting lab time when we need it. Planning does help; but getting consistent time to allow for the teaching practices I would like to implement is very difficult when you’re sharing the lab with other classes in the school. This piece of work explains how a solution was work out for my science department.

D. Module 4: Assessment and Evaluation

                    Module 4A - Modified A/E Tools

The modified assessment/evaluation tool that I will use with my students during a technology integrated activity is self-assessment. I have come to appreciate the power of the meta-cognitive process through the online courses I have taken over the past several months. Taking this tool into the classroom seems like the next most logical step!
